Renown and Stacie Mathewson Announce New Health Institute
With a $6 million donation, Renown Health announced its plans for the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health and Addiction Institute on Wednesday.
“The statistics are staggering,” said Renown Health President and CEO Anthony Slonim of Nevada’s ranking of 51st in the nation for mental illness, substance abuse and access to treatment.
- In Washoe County, 26.7 percent of people are battling mental health issues or addiction.
- One in 10 suffer significant impairment to health and well-being due to alcohol or drug use.
- There are 26.8 suicides per 100,000 in Washoe County, which is two times the national average.
- Suicide is the second leading cause of death of those ages 10 to 34.
Local philanthropist Stacie Mathewson’s son died of an overdose five years ago at age 29. She and her husband donated $6 million over the next five years to expand community access to prevention and intervention services for mental health disorders and alcohol and drug addiction.
